Vastu for Prayer Room in an apartment or Flat

November 12th 2007 09:08
Category: Vastu
I am writing this post as an extention to my earlier post - Praying in the Right Direction. While reading the search queries made in Google and other Search engines I realized that my earlier post does cover some Vastu tips on Prayer room which are generic, it mostly covers the direction of the prayer room and direction of prayers.
Girl Praying
Girl Praying

However, many of us live in apartments and flats and hence it is not possible to have a dedicated prayer room or make the North East room as a prayer room.

In order to simplify the tenets of Vastu, I am writing below the rules in decreasing order of importance such that the first one is a strict no-no and so on.

Don'ts:

1. Never use the bedroom (of couples leading an active sex life, boys who masturbate, girls who have reached puberity) as a pooja or prayer room.
2. Do not place the idols and images of God in a closed almirah
3. Never place a broken idol or painting in the prayer room.
4. The prayer room should not be next to, below or above a toilet.
5. Prayer room should not be in the South of the apartment or flat.
6. The prayer room should not be below the staircase.
7. Idols and Images of God or Messengers of God
Girl Praying
Girl Praying
should not be placed facing each other.

8. The pooja room should not have any photograph of dead and departed souls.

Dos:

1. Always place the images and idols such that you face the North or East while praying.
2. Keep the Pooja and Prayer room free of clutter and absolutely clean.
3. The colors of the walls should be white, light blue or light yellow.

In case of any queries on this topic feel free to write a comment.

God Bless!!

Hello MaUpma,
Thanks for being a much appreciated source for useful information.
I am in the process of making a few changes at my home. The most suitable location for a Pooja Shelf (with a proper pooja room door) is in my dining cum kitchen room. SEE LAYOUT OF ROOM IN MY PROFILE ICON. The pooja Shelf (something like a wardrobe) is intended to be made in the NORTH, on an extenal wall and will be facing SOUTH. (GREEN strip in picture). The pooja will have the Kitchen counter on IT'S left (Eastern Wall of the room - ORANGE strip in pic). Our prayers are planned to be made facing either North or east due to space constraints.
I would like to ask you if this is a good solution as I have heard that proximity to kitchen and South facing Pooja is in-auspicious

I also have the possibilty of using Glass on the beackground wall of the Pooja Shelf on the nothern wall.. Is that a good idea for decoration and natural lighting of the Pooja shelf ?

An opinion from you would be very helpful

This applies only to the Pooja area of the house. You should have preferably only one statue of a God/Goddess in the Pooja.

It also depends on the directions. I will suggest you remove the washbasin at least if you want to place a Pooja there.

Hi,

Pooja room made of wood is east facing and sitting would be north facing , There is window facing the pooja room where sunlight enters Parallel to pooja room will be wall completely closed and behind the wall other side would be wash basin and Toilet Please let me know if this is fine. 2nd option I have is there is another room between Master bed room and hall , where my 80 year old mother sleep
can a portion of that room be used as pooja room (facing east and sitting north)

Thank you again for your inputs

My parents live in another city and the toilet being used by my father for the last 20 years is in North East Corner of the House. Although we stay several 100 Kms from him still we are facing obstructions and stagnation in our professional life.

We are now getting this Toilet changed to Pooja Room. All the Tiles & Floor of the Toilet has now been removed and new Flooring (Cream Color) & tiles (Light Blue) are being put on walls. The Pooja Shelf is being made on East wall so that Idols face West Direction.

Please advice, if any other precaution needs to be taken during construction

When you are removing the toilet remove all sewage pipes from under the ground. Before installing the images and figurines of Gods please perform a Pooja of the place with the help of a good priest explaining him the history of the place.

Thanks for your above guidance. We have got all sewage pipes, Taps, removed.

I was planning to get a rudra-abhishek done first and then place Gods idols in the room. Please let us know what pooja will be best suited in such a case to remove bad effects of previous Toilet.

In order to accomodate all Idols / Photo Frames, we are getting the pooja sthan made into three shelves (one over other). First (near ground) to be 2.5 feet wider, second in middle- about 2 feet wide and third on top -1.5 feet wide. The Length of Each Shelf would be around 5 feet. Please confirm if its ok as per Vaastu.

Hi,

I have just moved to a new apt with 2 bedroom. North east part of the apt falls in a master bedroom and second bedroom is in the southwest. I cannot make puja area in my bedroom. Hence I have placed god idols in second bedroom such that while praying I face north but idol faces south. Is this ok?
one alternative can be to add a shelf on the east wall and place the idols so I will face east while praying in that southwest room.

Second alternative is to place idols on the study table facing east but across the bathroom and on the way to guestroom. Pls let me know which is the best place.

Dear Rachna

You can either pray facing North or faing East as per Vastu principles, in that case the Gods should face the South or West. There is no other option

Dear Elango

Your understanding that in Hinduism, spirits are considered as God is incorrect.

Dear Rachna

I will need to perform a detailed astrological analysis for finding the reasons for you loosing focus in work. This will be added with a small Vastu analysis of your workplace.

Since this is a paid service, you may write an email to me if interested.

Dear Snehal

Based on your description either of the first two options suggested by you looks OK to me.

Dear Aruna

As a general guideline please follow the suggestions in this post. For a more detailed personalized analysis you may write an email to me. This analysis is a paid service.

Dear Shailja

Based on your description I cannot very confidently say whether you should set your Pooja in the room where the floor above is half covered by bathroom. However, if you don't find any other option you may go ahead with it.

Dear Sivakumar

There is not fixed dimensions for the altar. Depends on how many pictures and statues you want to install.

Namaste. I bought a "V" shaped mantap and I am placing it the hall in the NE corner of my apartment (the sides of the mantap will be parallel to the walls). Since it is "V" shaped, the idols will be facing SW direction and we will be praying to the NE direction. Is it ok or should I keep the idols across the mantap so they face west and we face east. Also, I have 4 Ganesh idols in my house. If I choose 1 for pooja, can I keep the other three in a box ? Much Regards, Sudha.

Sudha

You can have the idols facing SW and you facing NE while performing Pooja.

When you buy Ganesha idols, you buy either one which is a Pooja idol or one which is a decorative figurine.

If there are three which are decorative in appearance, place them in the living room and one which looks like a Pooja one place it in Pooja.

You may place the mandir in such a way that you or any visitor sitting in front of you do not directly face the mandir at their back. It can be touching the wall behind you but towards your side.
