Lord Ganesha is the most prominent deities in Hinduism. His name is always invoked before any other God’s name in any prayer ceremony held by Hindus. Lord Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Ganesha is the only son of a God who is also worshipped with that prominence. The name Ganesha means Chief of all servers (Shiva’s servers).
Lord Ganesha is considered to be the Lord of intellect as he penned the Indian epic Mahabharata on the request of its author – Sage Ved Vyas. Lord Ganesha is the remover of all obstacles in life and salutation to Him helps the devotees to overcome all obstacles in career, relationships, health and plans. Due to this His devotees present Him the first invitation card to marriage and recite his Mantra before all good deeds in their lives.
On 23-August-2009, His devotees across the world will celebrate his birth anniversary which will also mark the start of the ten day long yearly festival – Ganeshotsav. Ganesha festival besides attracting His devotees to His temple in large numbers also has a special significance in Indian freedom movement. Balgangadhar Tilak the noted freedom fighter from India started this concept of community Ganesha Mandals to unite the society against the British rule. During the Ganesha festival, each colony will have a pandal in a common place where Ganesha will be worshipped twice daily for 10 days and the children of the colony will receive recognition for their talent and the elders will shun all differences between them and work towards the success of the festival and its activities.
Some of the other popular names of Lord Ganesha are Ganapati and Lod Vidneshwar.
Ganesha also has a special role to play in Vastu. I have written some articles on Lord Ganesha in my blog – www.indusguru.com and they are listed for easy reference as follows:
