The History of Meditation

Category: Meditation
Meditation, nearly as old as humanity, has always been mainstream in the east. Now western religions are re-discovering their own meditation past.

Prehistoric meditation (Shamanistic Tradition)

Nobody knows when meditation began. Experts say it may have been practiced by hunters thousands of years ago. Like other mystical practices, it might have been reserved for tribal shamans, who were believed to be in touch with the world of spirits.

2000-3000 BC (Vedic Tradition)

Meditation is described in ancient Hindu texts. It has been a part of religion and its many offshoots ever since.

588 BC (Buddhist Tradition)

After meditating under a banyan tree, Prince Siddhartha achieved enlightenment and a new religion Buddhism was formed. Buddhism places a strong importance of meditation.

2nd Century AD (Christian Meditation)

A group of Christian monks known as Desert Fathers retreated from the world to live in simplicity. They meditated to get closer to God. More than 1000 years afterwards, meditation became and increasingly important part of Christian practice.

1000 AD (Muslim Meditation)

Interestingly, the ancient practice of meditation was not restricted to Hinduism and Buddhism alone. The Muslim sect known as Sufis also incorporated meditation into their rituals of worship.

Lot of Indian Gurus like Mahesh Yogi are propagating Meditation across the world for the benefit of mankind.
