Five Ways Vastu and Feng Shui Differ
July 19th 2007 07:21
It is believed that thousands of years back when Chinese scholars visited India to study its culture and learn from its knowledge base, they studied Vastu - The Indian Science of Placement and Architecture and took that knowledge back to China. These scholars having understood the concepts applied it to Chinese Culture and devised what is now popularly known as Feng Shui.
Feng Shui is better known across the world than Vastu primarily because Chinese have been able to simplify the concepts to make it within the reach of understanding of a common man, devise several symbols and cures to make it easier for the consumer to benefit from it and commercialize it by way of several websites, web malls, product sale, courses across the world.
In this post I am attempting to list 5 important differences between Vastu and Feng Shui
1. Vastu places more importance on placement of different rooms in the house and in using different sectors of an office or factory for different purposes. Traditionally Vastu practitioners have been suggesting structural changes in the building to remove Vastu defects. Feng Shui on the other hand suggests placement of different Cures and products to remove the defects.
2. Vastu as stated above believes in removing placement defects and does not concentrate on enhancing a sector of the house to derive benefit from that direction. Feng Shui has cures both for the purpose of removing defects and also for enhancing or activating a sector to achieve specific benefits.
3. Vastu symbolisms are not popularized as Feng Shui symbolisms. Moreover, while Feng Shui has always propogated prominant display of Feng Shui products and cures to derive benefit from it, Vastu has always suggested cures which are not that prominantly visible in the house. In Feng Shui this has made it popular as more and more people have adopted it to decorate their places. On the other hand Vastu has remained a mystery and difficult to understand for the masses.
4. Both Feng Shui and Vastu have five elements. As per Feng Shui, the five elements are Water, Fire, Wood, Metal and Earth. As per Vastu the five elements are - Air, Water, Earth, Fire and Space (Ether). While Feng Shui has both constructive and destructive cycles of the five elements, Vastu only has a constructive cycle.
5. Feng Shui does not place much importance to the location of well, underground water tank, over head water tank, septic tank in the premises. In Vastu all these parts of the building are important and depending on their position in the building, the effects and benefits can be seen on those who reside in it.
In one of my next posts, I will cover some of the myths surrounding Vastu and the truth behind it.
