Breathe Easy: Breathe Right

The brain needs a constant supply of clean, oxygen-rich blood to think clearly. Your muscles need it for vitality and your digestive system needs it to utilize the food you eat and to get rid of waste products.
Breathe Correctly

However, all these benefits are derived only if you breathe correctly. The key is to take deep, not shallow, breaths. Many of us think that we breathe deeply – we suck our bellies and raise our shoulders while taking a big gulp of air. But this technique is incorrect. When we do this we are actually taking shallow breaths. This can lead to severe strain on the vocal chords and can lead to exhaustion. In certain situation the practitioner can get catch in ribs and aches and pains in different parts of the body.

So what is the right way to breathe? Experts believe that the right way to breathe is to fill your lungs deeply. For making most of the breathing only breathe through your nose. Lower the diaphragm muscle by expanding the abdomen. This way lungs elongates and the air expands all around. It is also important to do it slowly. It is ideal if the length of inhalation and exhalation is approximately the same.
Breathe Correctly

Many interpret deep breathing with breathing quickly. That could lead to a complication called hyperventilation. Fast, shallow breaths expel the carbon dioxide inside the body rather quickly and can lead to a lower consumption of oxygen in the blood. The key is to simply slow down and let the air fill you completely.

In the next post I will write further on deep breathing.

Till then…Cheers…

Im asthmatic, which means Ive cobbled together a way of breathing so I can live.
I have trouble exhaling fully - I find if Im feeling a panic attack its from a build up of carbon doixide. I breathe out, and stop. I dont draw in a new one. I can sit there for literal minutes while the air trickles out - when my lungs are literally empty I draw a new one, and so on.
Im also an oxygen junkie....Have to watch out I dont take too much of it!

Dear Kleonaptra

I do not how much you are aware of Yoga and Pranayama. But I suggest you meet a yoga expert in your locality and share with him/her that you are asthamatic and he/she will suggest and guide with a Pranayama technique which will help you in overcoming this problem.

Take Care

I have heard of pranayama and it fascinates me. Im aware of many different types of breathing techniques but I have yet to choose which way Id like to learn them. Its not yoga - I dont think - but there are stretches I like to do each day that I made up myself that help a lot.

Yoga and other stretches will help but remember Yoga and Pranayama are established alternate therapeis and they have sue cure for Asthma if practised regularly.

It is just a suggestion.

Take care

Hi Ma Upma,

Thank you for posting this. I've had a very bad run with respiratory/lung problems. So bad I needed to have a double lung transplant 4 years ago. The ability to breath is something most people take for granted and neglect. You just need to look outside and count how many people there are smoking their lungs away. It's such a pity. I had to fight for each breath for many years.
I've heard of this practise from my colleagues.

I will definately try out this technique. Breathing exercises is something I'm prescibed to do all the time. I might try putting on my ipod with some relaxation music while I sit breathing while in front of my pc at work. It will look like I'm concentrating on my work.
